advanced BEGINNING WEAVING

September 24-26, 2010:

This three-day class is for students who have completed a beginning weaving class and now want to explore the use of various fibers, patterns, and finishing techniques. Over three days we will study pattern drafts and weave a round robin of mats and runners in patterns that will include geometric overshot, lace weave, and eight harness twills with variations. The class will include a review of loom preparation and a more in-depth look at how to thread and weave patterns on four and eight harness looms.

During the three days, students will move from loom to loom, weaving a placemat or runner on each loom. The projects will use wool, cotton, silk, and linen to give students the feel for a variety of yarn types on the loom. Finishing techniques will include both on-loom techniques and techniques to use after the piece comes off the loom.

Time will be given for discussion and exploration of fibers and yarn sources when planning a project. Students will go home with lots of woven pieces. Handouts will include information on various fibers as well as suggested reference books and sources for materials and equipment.
