Workshop Event
Saturday, October 16

On Saturday, October 16, 2010, The National Museum of the American Coverlet is proud to hold a workshop in conjunction with the current exhibition Stay at Home and Use Me Well – Flax and Fleece: Fiber to Fabric. Come visit beautiful Bedford, PA in the fall foliage season, see the exhibition and attend two educational workshop sessions.

Four sessions approximately two hours each will be presented twice, once in the morning and once in the afternoon. Attendees can sign up for one or two of the following sessions:

The Flax Process will be demonstrated by flax expert Eric Weit. Eric will demonstrate all the necessary steps involved in transforming the flax plant into spun linen. Eric has demonstrated the flax process for several years at various spinning and craft events, including The Mannings Spinning Seminar.

Spinning on a Double Flyer will be demonstrated by the accomplished spinner Cindy Donohue. On the internet you can see Cindy spinning on a Beardsley Sanford double flyer at the Riverrim Blog website. Session attendees will be given an opportunity to spin on some double flyer spinning wheels from the Kitty Bell and Ron Walter collection.

Moving Spindle Spinning Wheels will include an overview presented by expert Florence Feldman-Wood, editor of The Spinning Wheel Sleuth newsletter and recipient of EAIA Research Grants to further the knowledge of spinning wheels. Pat Hilts will demonstrate spinning on a moving spindle wheel from the Kitty Bell and Ron Walter collection, and workshop attendees will have the opportunity to try their hand at it as well.

How the Jacquard Head Works and Coverlet Weave Structures will be presented by Richard and Chris Jeryan, members of our own Board of Directors. Richard and Chris, accomplished hand weavers, will share their experiences in returning the Henry Ford Jacquard head to operation, as well as their knowledge of coverlet weave structures. Samples of various coverlets will be available for examination, and the weave structures will be identified.

Non-Members $45 per session and Members $40 per session; includes workshop session and access to the Museum.
